The day commemorates the birth of the 10th Guru of Sikhism, revered for his spiritual leadership, warrior spirit, and dedication to social justice.

The day is marked by joyous festivities in Gurdwaras (Sikh places of worship) worldwide. Prayers, hymns, readings from Guru Granth Sahib (the Sikh scripture), processions, and community feasts (langar) are common features. The banks will remain closed in Chandigarh.

GURU GOBIND SINGH JAYANTI 2024 CELEBRATIONS

  1. Gurdwaras are decorated with lights and flowers to mark the festive occasion. The holy scripture, Guru Granth Sahib, is read continuously in the days leading up to the celebration.
  2. Sikhs organize Nagar Kirtan, which is a religious procession that involves singing hymns and prayers while marching through the streets. The Guru Granth Sahib is carried in a beautifully decorated palanquin, and the procession often includes devotees, martial arts displays, and the Panj Pyare (Five Beloved Ones).
  3. Sikhs may observe Akhand Path, which is the continuous reading of the Guru Granth Sahib from beginning to end. This reading typically takes 48 hours and involves a relay of readers.
  4. Special kirtan (devotional music) and katha (discourse) programs are organized in Gurdwaras to commemorate Guru Gobind Singh’s teachings and life.
  5. Some Sikhs choose Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti for the initiation ceremony of Amrit, which is the Sikh baptism ceremony. During this ceremony, individuals commit to the principles of Sikhism and adopt the Five Ks, which are the distinctive articles of faith.
