India celebrates National Legal Services Day on November 9 every year. This date was made to honour the passage of the Legal Services Authorities Act of 1987, which came into force on November 9, 1995. The observation of this day is an essential milestone in guaranteeing that access to justice is not a privilege for just the affluent but a right of all citizens, including those from marginalized and impoverished backgrounds.
NATIONAL LEGAL SERVICES DAY 2024: HISTORY
The National Legal Services Day was established by the Supreme Court as part of its proactive role in promoting access to justice. The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) was constituted on December 5, 1995, for the purpose of giving effect to the provisions contained in the Legal Services Authorities Act. It was a landmark development within India’s legal structure aimed at providing free and competent legal services to those unable to afford them.
The reason to have such an initiative is because many individuals were denied access to legal help due to the factors of poverty, ignorance and social stigma. Hence, the government sought to make legal aid services a part of the institution.
NATIONAL LEGAL SERVICES DAY 2024: OBJECTIVE
The day is marked to promote awareness regarding the legal rights and the availability of legal aid services. It intends to make people aware of the provisions of the Legal Services Authorities Act and how they may obtain free legal assistance.

One of the main objectives is to make sure that justice will be served to anyone disregarding their socio-economic status.
The Lok Adalats (people’s courts) and mediation are encouraged as suitable methods of settling disputes outside the protracted process of litigation. Such mechanisms aim at providing quicker resolutions and alleviating improvements in the load of traditional courts.
The legal aid is specifically targeted at women, children, members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST), and other marginalized communities which are often plagued by systemic challenges in accessing justice.
NATIONAL LEGAL SERVICES DAY 2024: KEY ACTIVITIES
Legal Aid Camps
Such camps are organized at different locations to offer direct legal assistance and advice. It provides platforms where people can discuss their legal problems with lawyers free of charge.
Lok Adalats
Special Lok Adalats are designated on this day for amicable settlement of disputes. Such courts operate outside the formal judicial system and aim to resolve cases expeditiously and effectively.

Legal Awareness Programs
These are the educative initiatives at schools, colleges, and communities aimed at making people aware of their legal rights and the services available to them. Usually, workshops, seminars, and printed informational materials are conducted as part of these programs.
Collaboration with NGOs
Numerous NGOs work with NALSA and state legal service authorities to conduct outreach programs aimed at informing people about their rights and the mechanism to access legal assistance.
Eligibility Of Free Legal Services For:
- Women and children
- Members of Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST)
- Industrial workers
- Victims of natural disasters or violence
- Persons with disabilities
- Individuals in custody
- Those whose annual income falls below a specified threshold (currently set at Rs. 3 lakh).
